"I feel like I've tried everything. I still don’t feel safe."
You’ve talked it through, journalled about it, maybe done therapy before, and yet your body still reacts like the past is happening right now. A certain sound, look, or date, and you’re right back there. You’re on edge, bracing, exhausted from carrying something that was never your fault, and you can’t help but wonder if this is the new norm.
When talking hasn’t been enough, EMDR works differently. It helps your brain process what’s been stuck, so the past no longer controls the present. Let’s get you there.
Find freedom from your past.
Signs that EMDR might help you
When something overwhelming happens, it can get “stuck” in the brain, and keep firing off long after the danger’s gone.
- Feeling constantly alert, on edge, or braced for something to go wrong
- Freezing, zoning out, or disconnecting when things feel like too much
- Chronic tension and stress, your body just won't release
- Trouble sleeping, or nightmares that pull you back
- Feeling like you're "too much," broken, or somehow to blame
- Struggling to trust yourself or your own reactions
- Frustration that you're still carrying the past, no matter how hard you've worked
- Shame about something that was never your fault
If this sounds familiar, it means your brain is holding onto something that's ready to be processed. Let's help it heal.

How EMDR Works: The 8 Phases
EMDR might sound a little mysterious at first, so here’s what to expect. We move through eight phases together, and we never start processing until you feel safe and ready.
The 8 Phases
1. History & Treatment Planning
Your EMDR therapist in Cambridge gets to know your history and works with you to develop a plan that maps out what you’d like to process.
2. Preparation
This is all about building trust. Your therapist explains the EMDR process, answers your questions, and teaches you tools to manage emotional distress, so you feel steady before any deeper work begins.
3. Assessment
Together, you identify the specific memories to work on, along with the images, beliefs, feelings, and body sensations tied to them.
4. Desensitization
Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or handheld buzzies) while you hold the memory in mind, this phase gently lowers the emotional charge it carries.
5. Installation
Here you strengthen a new, kinder belief about yourself, building it up until it feels completely true.
6. Body Scan
You notice and process any lingering tension or sensations still held in the body.
7. Closure
Your EMDR therapist helps you return to calm at the end of every session, whether or not processing is complete. We can’t change the past, but the hope is that it starts to feel smaller and lighter.
8. Reevaluation
At the start of each new session, you and your therapist review what you’ve processed to make sure your progress is holding, and decide where to go next.
When we recognize that we are being held back in life, the question for each of us is ‘What do I do about it?’

EMDR Therapy FAQs
What is EMDR, and how is it different from regular talk therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy developed to treat trauma and PTSD. Where talk therapy works through reflection and understanding, EMDR goes a step further and addresses what’s troubling you at a neurological level. Using bilateral stimulation (back-and-forth eye movements or taps), we help your brain process the past so you can be more present in your life now.
What actually happens in an EMDR session?
We start by getting to know your history and clarifying what you’d like to feel instead of the weight you’ve been carrying. You’ll learn tools to manage big emotions and return to calm. From there, you begin processing through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, buzzies or taps) while bringing a distressing memory to mind. Over time, that memory tends to shift, and many people describe it as becoming smaller or losing its intensity. The beauty of EMDR is that you don’t have to say your thoughts out loud, all your EMDR therapist in Cambridge needs to know is whether the image is changing or staying the same.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
It depends on your experiences and your history, so there’s no single answer. For a single-incident trauma like a car accident, many people notice relief within 6 to 12 sessions. More complex or relational trauma often takes longer. Many people find EMDR works faster than talk therapy, since it addresses the trauma directly. Your Cambridge EMDR therapist will talk through what to expect for your particular situation.
How do I find an EMDR therapist in the Waterloo Region?
Look for a therapist with EMDRIA-approved training, and don’t hesitate to ask about their credentials and experience. Most importantly, you should feel safe and comfortable with whoever you begin this healing with. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, EMDR is one of our very favourite tools for trauma, and our therapists are trained and ready to support you.
Is EMDR safe? Will I have to talk about what happened in detail?
EMDR is safe and strongly backed by research, and no, you don’t have to recount what happened in detail or at length. You’ll be asked to bring a memory or feeling to mind internally, but the processing happens inside you, not through retelling it to your therapist. We don’t begin trauma reprocessing until you feel safe and secure, and you’re always in the driver’s seat, free to pause at any point.
Can EMDR be done online, or does it have to be in person?
Both work well. Research consistently shows online EMDR can be just as effective as in-person, using the same eight-phase process and bilateral stimulation adapted for video. Your therapist will guide the eye movements or tapping on screen and spend a little extra time up front making sure you feel grounded and safe in your own space. We offer in-person EMDR at our Cambridge office and virtual sessions across Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph, so you can choose whatever helps you feel most settled.
Why does EMDR work when other therapies haven't?
For a lot of people, talking about what happened builds real understanding but doesn’t quite shift how the memory feels in the body. That’s because trauma often gets stored differently in the brain, more like a live wire than a filed-away memory. EMDR works at that level, helping your brain reprocess what’s stuck so it stops firing off in the present. Many people who’ve felt like they were going in circles in talk therapy find EMDR finally reaches the part that wouldn’t budge.
Can EMDR make me feel worse before I feel better?
Sometimes emotions can feel more present as you begin processing, particularly things you’ve kept tucked away. That’s a normal part of the work, not a sign something’s wrong, and it usually settles. This is why we spend time on preparation and grounding tools before any reprocessing begins. You’re always in the driver’s seat, and we can slow down or pause any time you need to.
How often should I have EMDR sessions?
Most people do EMDR weekly or every other week, which gives you time to integrate between reprocessing sessions. There’s no single right rhythm, and your therapist will help you find a pace that feels supportive rather than overwhelming. Consistency tends to help the work build momentum, so we’ll land on a cadence that’s realistic for your life and your nervous system.
Does EMDR only help with trauma, or can it help with other things too?
EMDR is best known for trauma and PTSD, and it reaches much further than that. Because so many struggles are rooted in stuck memories and old beliefs, EMDR can also help with anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, low self-esteem, and even barriers to intimacy. If something from your history is quietly shaping how you feel today, EMDR may be able to help, whatever the label on it.
