Encanta Counselling & Wellness

Your body is still bracing for something that's already over.

You made it through. Technically, you’re safe now. So why does your body still flinch at a certain tone of voice, a smell, a date on the calendar? You’re exhausted from staying alert all day, lying awake at night, or feeling like you’re watching your own life from behind glass. You’ve carried this for a long time, and part of you wonders if relief is even possible.

Trauma therapy in Cambridge helps you find your way back to safety one step at a time.

Healing starts here.

Signs that trauma may still be with you

Trauma doesn’t always look like the event itself. Often it shows up long after, in your body, your sleep, and the way you move through each day.

You might notice:

If you see yourself on this list, it means your body has done its best to protect you until now. Let's gently work on what comes next.

Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Cambridge, ON

Types of Trauma We Support

When a traumatic event leaves lasting marks, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and a nervous system stuck on high alert. PTSD can make the past feel like it’s still happening, but it can ease with the right support from a PTSD therapist in Cambridge.

The pain of sexual violence or harm that can live in your body, your intimacy, and your sense of self. We hold this with deep care and zero judgment. You can also explore our therapy for sexual abuse and trauma services here.

The weight of racism, displacement, and cultural harm that so many therapists were never equipped to hold with you. Here, you don’t have to explain or justify it. Learn more on our therapy for racial and cultural trauma page.

Pain that was passed down through your family and community, carried before it ever reached you. Naming it is often the first step toward setting it down.

The deep marks left by controlling, abusive, or unsafe relationships, and the work of rebuilding safety, trust, and your sense of self afterward.

Hurt that happened when you were young and still learning who you were. It can shape how you see yourself and how safe you feel with others, long into adulthood.

Ongoing harm or unmet needs during the years your sense of self was forming. It can affect how you regulate emotions, trust others, and feel at home in your own skin.

Trauma that came from repeated or prolonged experiences rather than a single event. It can feel woven into who you are, and it can also be gently untangled over time.

The lasting stress of financial hardship, instability, or control, and the anxiety, shame, or fear around money that can linger long after the situation changes.

How We Work Together in Trauma Therapy

Healing from trauma isn’t about forcing yourself to relive the worst moments of your life. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we start with safety, and we go at a speed your nervous system can trust. Think of it like tending a garden that’s weathered a storm. We don’t yank anything out. We clear space gently, tend what’s still growing, and let new roots take hold in their own time.

We draw from a range of trauma-focused tools and approaches:

Support tailored to your unique needs and goals, so the work always feels safe. We create an empowering space that keeps your resilience at the centre.

EMDR uses gentle, guided eye movements that help your brain reprocess traumatic memories, so they lose their grip and stop hijacking your present.

A trauma-focused approach that helps you challenge and shift the painful beliefs trauma can leave behind about yourself, others, and the world.

A carefully paced technique that helps you gradually face feared memories and situations, so avoidance loosens its hold, and your world can open back up.

IFS meets the different parts of you, including the ones still holding pain, with curiosity and compassion, so you can lead from a steadier place.

Skills like emotional regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance can help you steady yourself when things feel overwhelming.

Support to understand how early relationships shaped the way you connect and trust, so you can build bonds where you feel genuinely safe and seen.

Information, resources, and reflective exercises that help you understand your responses and see what healing can really look like.

The past affects the present even without our being aware of it.

Trauma Therapy FAQs

Therapy offers a safe, professional space to explore and process painful past experiences gently. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we use evidence-based approaches like trauma-informed therapy, EMDR, and CPT to ease symptoms such as flashbacks, panic attacks, and low self-esteem, so the past stops running your present.

No, and this is one of the most common worries we hear. You don’t have to share the details of what happened to heal from it. You decide what you share and when. Your trauma therapist in Cambridge starts with safety and stability, and from there, the two of you explore only what’s needed to process the past and move forward.

If you’ve lived through something overwhelming or frightening, whether a single event or ongoing experiences like abuse, sexual violence, an accident, loss, or an unstable childhood, what you’re feeling may be trauma, PTSD, or complex trauma. These often show up as anxiety and depression, too. Your therapist in Cambridge can help you make sense of your symptoms and find real relief.

Your first session is all about creating a safe, comfortable space. You can talk through your goals, a little of your experience, and any immediate concerns, with no pressure to go into detail or share more than you’re ready to. Those first several sessions are really about building trust with your Cambridge trauma therapist.

Yes. We offer in-person, trauma-informed therapy from our office in Cambridge and virtual sessions for clients across Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph. Whatever you’re facing, we’ll work with you to find safety and relief again.

It’s a fair worry, and the honest answer is that some feelings can surface as you begin processing, particularly things you’ve kept numbed or tucked away. That’s a normal part of healing, not a sign something’s going wrong, and it usually settles. This is why we don’t rush. We start with safety and grounding tools, move at a speed your nervous system can handle, and slow right down any time you need to. You’re always in the driver’s seat.

Yes. EMDR is one of the most well-researched trauma treatments available. It helps your brain reprocess stuck traumatic memories, so remembering no longer feels like reliving. Many people find real relief within the first several reprocessing sessions, and unlike some approaches, EMDR doesn’t ask you to describe your trauma in detail or take homework home.

There’s no set timeline, since it depends on what you’ve lived through and how your body holds it. As a rough guide, a single traumatic event often takes fewer sessions to process, while complex or long-standing trauma tends to unfold over several months or longer. Many people say they feel a sense of hope and a few early shifts, like steadier sleep or less intense triggers, within the first handful of sessions, with deeper change building from there.

That’s completely okay. Trauma often gets stored in fragments, sensations, or feelings rather than a clear, tidy memory, especially trauma from early childhood. You don’t need a full, detailed account for therapy to help. We can work with what’s there, including what your body remembers, and healing doesn’t require you to piece together every moment.

For most people, yes. Research shows online trauma therapy, including EMDR, tends to work about as well as in-person sessions, and your Cambridge trauma therapist will use approaches designed to work over video. It also means you can do this work from a space where you already feel safe. We offer both in-person trauma therapy in Cambridge and virtual sessions across Ontario, so you can choose whatever feels most comfortable and switch if your needs change.
