Encanta Counselling & Wellness
When you feel like pain is the price of intimacy.
You flinch before it starts, because your body already knows what’s coming. Burning, stinging, an ache that lingers for hours afterward. Maybe you’ve been told to relax, or have a glass of wine, or that everything looks fine, so it must be in your head. So you’ve started saying no, then feeling guilty for saying no, then dreading the next time you’ll have to.
Therapy for sexual pain in Cambridge can help you understand what’s happening in your body and find your way back to comfort.
Find your way back to pleasure.
Does this sound familiar?
Sexual pain is far more common than the silence around it suggests, and it’s a recognized medical and psychological condition.
- Tension you can't release in your pelvic floor
- Burning or stinging during or after penetration
- Soreness and aching that linger after sex
- Pain during medical exams, including pap tests
- Dread building at the thought of intimacy
- Guilt, or a sense that you're failing your partner
- Feeling broken, ashamed, or completely alone in it
- Avoiding sex, then feeling worse about avoiding it
Noticing yourself in these words takes courage, and you deserve to be taken seriously. Let's take the next step toward comfort and pleasure.

What Is Sexual Pain?
Also called dyspareunia, sexual pain covers any pain felt before, during, or after sex. It might show up as burning, stinging, aching, or throbbing, and it can be persistent or come and go. It affects people of every gender and body.

Pelvic Pain
Tension, tightness, or discomfort in the pelvic floor, sometimes constant and sometimes triggered by touch, penetration, or a medical exam.

Pain During Intercourse
Pain at entry, deeper inside, or afterward, whether that's the first time, every time, or only with certain partners or in certain moments.
What Causes Sexual Pain?
It’s rarely just one thing:
Physical factors
like infections, hormonal changes, endometriosis, childbirth, or surgery.
Psychological factors
like anxiety, trauma, shame, or the fear that builds after pain has happened before.
Relational factors
like pressure, disconnection, or feeling unable to say stop. These usually feed each other, which is why treating just one rarely resolves it.
Sexual pain is treatable, and we can help with that.

How We Work Together in Therapy for Sexual Pain
Sexual pain deserves a team. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we work alongside your doctor, gynecologist, or pelvic floor physiotherapist, tending to everything a physical exam can’t reach, and we’ll refer you on when something falls outside our scope. Our job is the fear, the tension, and the story your body has learned about sex, all of which are very real parts of the pain.
We draw from a range of approaches:
1:1 Sexual Pain Therapy Sessions
Personalized support to understand your pain, entirely on your terms and timing.
Couples & Relationship Therapy Sessions
Therapy that helps you and your partner(s) improve communication and strengthen your bond, so the pain stops driving a wedge between you.
Sex Therapy
Judgement-free sex therapy for the emotional, psychological, and physical sides of sexual health and intimacy.
Psychoeducation
Information and resources to help you understand what’s happening during pain, and what change could look like. Understanding it is often the first real relief.
Mindfulness-Based Exercises
Breathing techniques, body scans, and meditation to help you feel safe and present in your body again, rather than braced against it.
Sensate Focus
A structured touch exercise that takes penetration and performance off the table entirely, so you can rediscover sensation without fear. Practiced in your own time.
Worksheets
Structured exercises and prompts to help you reflect, track patterns, and practice new skills between sessions.
Don't use somebody else's standard to measure the quality of your sex life.

Therapy for Sexual Pain FAQs
Do I have to involve my partner in therapy?
Not at all. Plenty of people start with individual therapy for sexual pain. You don’t need a relationship to begin understanding your body and helping it find calm. If you do have a partner, many people find couples sessions a safe, affirming space to work through how the pain is affecting your intimacy together.
How do I know if the pain I'm experiencing is real or just in my head?
The pain you’re experiencing is very real. Sexual pain is a recognized medical and psychological condition, and so many of our clients arrive after being dismissed or told to just relax. There can be physiological and psychological factors influencing your pain, often together. Your sex therapist in Cambridge will help you understand and address the psychological side, and refer you on for anything outside our scope. You will never be told it’s in your head here.
Can therapy actually help with sexual pain?
Yes. Sexual pain rarely has a single cause, and therapy can address the fear, avoidance, tension, stress, and trauma that build up around it over time. We support the mental, emotional, and sexual parts of your pain, working in collaboration with your other healthcare practitioners rather than in isolation.
What does a sex therapy session actually look like?
Sex therapy involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, patterns, relationship dynamics, the tension in your body, and your whole relationship to sex. Nothing physical ever happens in a sexual pain therapy session. Our therapists weave in other modalities and frameworks too, so the work is tailored to your specific experience.
Is there a therapist who works with sexual pain near me?
Yes! Encanta Counselling & Wellness is based in Cambridge, Ontario, and we offer in-person sessions for individuals and couples living with sexual pain. If you’re outside the Waterloo Region, we provide convenient, accessible virtual therapy across Ontario. Either way, our free consultation is a chance to connect with your therapist and ask anything you need to.
Should I see a pelvic floor physiotherapist too?
Often, yes, and we’d encourage it. Sexual pain usually has physical and psychological threads woven together, and the research consistently shows that a multidisciplinary approach works best. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can work directly with the muscle tension, while we work with the fear, the bracing, the trauma, and the story your body has learned about sex. The two support each other beautifully, and we’re happy to work alongside your physio, doctor, or gynecologist.
What's the difference between vaginismus, vulvodynia, and dyspareunia?
The terms get tangled, so here’s the plain version. Dyspareunia is the umbrella term for pain during sex, wherever it’s felt. Vaginismus is when the pelvic floor muscles tighten involuntarily, making penetration painful or impossible. Vulvodynia is chronic vulvar pain lasting three months or more, which may happen with or without touch. You don’t need to know which one you have before reaching out. That’s what the first conversation is for.
How long does it take for sexual pain to improve?
There’s no fixed answer, since it depends on what’s driving your pain and how long you’ve been living with it. Many people notice real shifts in understanding early on, and pain that’s been building for years usually eases over months rather than weeks. Bodies that have learned to brace take time to learn something different, and that’s worth being patient with rather than pushing through. Your therapist will check in on your progress as you go.
Can I still come to therapy if I've never been able to have penetrative sex?
Absolutely, and you’re far from the only one. Some people have lived with this since their very first attempt, whether that’s sex, a tampon, or a pelvic exam. There’s often a lot of shame and isolation stacked on top by then, particularly if partners or doctors haven’t understood. Nothing about that is unusual to us, and you’ll never be rushed toward penetration as a goal, or any goal you haven’t chosen.
My doctor said everything looks normal. So why does it still hurt?
This is one of the most frustrating and common things we hear. A normal exam doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real; it means the cause isn’t visible on the table. Pain is produced by your nervous system, not just by tissue, and once your body has learned that sex means pain, it starts bracing before anything’s even happened. That protective response is real, physical, and treatable. You just need someone looking at the whole picture. Book a free consultation to get started with us.
