"Why does everything feel so intense?"
Your emotions arrive at full volume, and by the time you’ve caught up to them, you’ve already said or done the thing you’re now replaying on a loop. You love people fiercely, then panic that they’ll leave. You’re exhausted from bracing for the moment someone decides you’re too much.
You’re not too much. You feel deeply, and that can become a positive aspect with the right support. BPD therapy in Cambridge helps you find that.
Find relief from the intensity.
Signs BPD may be part of what you're experiencing
You might notice:
- Emotions that hit hard and fast, then shift just as quickly
- A deep fear of being abandoned or left, even by people who love you
- Relationships that feel intense, close, then suddenly uncertain
- Shame about your own reactions, and replaying them afterward
- Feeling empty, numb, or disconnected from your body
- Impulsive urges around spending, sex, substances, or other risks when emotions spike
- Moments of feeling detached from reality, deeply suspicious, or outside yourself
- A belief that you're somehow broken or too much
Noticing yourself in these words is a brave first step. Let's take the next one together.

Understanding BPD & The Stigma Around It
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and relates to others.
It’s often marked by intense emotions, unstable relationships, and a distorted self-image. BPD can be challenging to live with, but with compassionate support, people with BPD go on to lead full, meaningful lives.
Still, BPD is frequently misunderstood and stigmatized. The term “borderline” itself can be misleading, since it suggests something not quite “serious” or on the edge of other conditions. In reality, BPD is a legitimate mental health condition that deserves compassion and understanding.
A lot of the stigma comes from misconceptions, and from the way BPD is often portrayed in the media as dramatic or manipulative. These stereotypes can lead to unfair judgements, making it harder for individuals with BPD to reach out and feel accepted when they do. We want you to know that the intense emotions and impulsive moments that come with BPD are part of a condition, not a reflection of your character. You deserve support that sees the whole you, and we’re here to give you that.

How We Work Together in BPD Therapy
At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we see the person, never the label. Big feelings aren’t a flaw to fix. Think of your emotions like waves: they can rise fast and feel overwhelming, but with the right skills, you learn to ride them instead of being pulled under.
We draw from proven methods and BPD-informed tools:
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
The gold standard for BPD, developed with these exact experiences in mind. DBT builds skills in emotional regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and relationships, so hard moments become more manageable.
1:1 BPD Therapy Sessions
Personalized, one-on-one support tailored to your unique needs, history, and goals, at a pace that feels safe.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A structured approach to notice and gently shift the thought patterns that fuel shame, fear, and self-criticism.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
A mindfulness-based approach that helps you make room for intense feelings without being ruled by them, while building a life around what matters most to you.
Screeners & Assessments
Thoughtful tools to help us understand your emotional patterns together, so your care fits you.
Skills-Building Worksheets
Reflective exercises and practical prompts to help you carry your new tools out of the therapy room and into daily life.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
When trauma is part of your story, which it often is with BPD, we can weave in trauma-informed care or research-backed approaches like EMDR to help you heal.

BPD Therapy FAQs
Can BPD really be treated?
Yes! So many people with BPD have been told that they’re too difficult or too much to help. That simply isn’t true. BPD symptoms can ease significantly with the right approach. Therapies like DBT were developed specifically with BPD in mind and are strongly backed by research. With the right support from a therapist for BPD in Cambridge, many people with BPD go on to build genuinely meaningful, connected lives.
What if I don't like my therapist?
The relationship between you and your BPD therapist is one of the biggest ingredients in therapy working, so this matters. It can take a few sessions to settle in and feel comfortable with someone new. If it still isn’t clicking, email info@encanta.ca and we’ll happily help match you with a therapist who feels like a better fit. No awkwardness, no hard feelings.
How do I know if what I'm experiencing is BPD, or something else like trauma or bipolar disorder?
Great question, since BPD is often mistaken for bipolar disorder, ADHD, depression, or anxiety, and the symptoms really do overlap. One key distinction: with BPD, the emotional shifts are usually tied to relationships and a fear of rejection, rather than mood cycles that come and go on their own. A Cambridge BPD therapist can help you make sense of what’s really going on, and help you move forward with confidence.
How long will therapy take?
Lasting change with BPD usually takes longer than short-term therapy models. Realistically, meaningful work tends to unfold over many months to a few years, depending on your history and goals. That said, many people notice earlier shifts in their mood and conflict patterns well before then. Your therapist in Cambridge will set goals with you and check in regularly, so you always know where things stand.
What's the difference between DBT and regular talk therapy?
Talk therapy can be wonderfully helpful, and it works differently from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). DBT was built specifically for individuals with BPD and focuses on concrete skills for when things get hard. That said, the two aren’t opposites, and the best BPD work usually weaves them together, insight and understanding alongside practical, in-the-moment tools.
Can BPD ever fully go away?
Here’s something hopeful that doesn’t get said enough: BPD has a far better outlook than most people are led to believe. With the right therapy, symptoms can ease so much that many folks no longer meet the criteria for BPD at all. Research on DBT has found that a large share of people no longer met the diagnosis after a year of focused work. The goal isn’t to erase who you are, it’s to turn down the intensity and help you build a life that feels steady and yours. Recovery is possible.
Do I need medication to treat BPD?
Not necessarily. Therapy, particularly DBT, is the main and most effective treatment for BPD, and there isn’t strong evidence that medication treats the condition itself. Some people do find medication helpful for things that often ride alongside BPD, like depression or anxiety. We can’t prescribe, but your therapist can talk it through with you and coordinate with your doctor if that feels useful. The heart of the work stays in the skills and support you build together.
Can BPD affect my relationships, and can therapy help?
Yes, and this is often the part that hurts most. BPD can make relationships feel intense and unsteady, swinging between deep closeness and the fear that someone’s about to leave. It’s draining for you and confusing for the people who love you. Happily, this is what therapy helps with. A big piece of DBT is interpersonal effectiveness, learning to voice your needs, hold boundaries, and build connections that feel secure.
Is BPD therapy available online, or only in person in Cambridge?
Both. We offer in-person BPD therapy at our Cambridge office, and virtual sessions for individuals across Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph. Some people feel more grounded doing this work from their own space, while others prefer being in the room, and you’re welcome to choose whichever suits you, or switch as your needs change.
Is there a BPD therapist near me?
Yes. If you’re searching for a BPD therapist near you in the Waterloo Region, Encanta Counselling & Wellness offers in-person BPD therapy from our office in Cambridge, plus virtual sessions for folks across Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph. What matters most is finding someone with real experience supporting BPD who you feel genuinely safe with, and our therapists bring both the training and the warm, non-judgemental approach you deserve.
