"I knew non-monogamy would take work. I didn't expect it to take this much."
You have more love in your life than ever, and somehow it’s surfacing everything: old attachment wounds, jealousy you swore you’d be past by now, and the endless juggle of time, needs, and everyone’s feelings. Maybe you’ve sat in a therapist’s office and burned half the session just explaining what your relationship is, or braced for the moment they hinted monogamy would fix it. You want your love to feel as good as you know it can; you just don’t have the next step.
Here, you won’t have to translate yourself or defend how you love. Let’s tend to your relationships together.
Cultivate relationships you love.
Does this sound familiar?
Non-monogamy can be deeply fulfilling and a lot of work, often at the same time.
- Feeling misunderstood by friends, family, partners, or past therapists
- Overwhelmed trying to hold multiple relationships at once
- Ashamed of your jealousy, because you thought you'd be past it by now
- Watching old trauma and triggers show up in your relationships
- Struggling to ask for what you need or set clear boundaries
- Navigating hierarchy tensions, time management, or shifting dynamics
- Doing your own inner work and waiting for your relationships to catch up
- Wanting closeness and honesty that brings you nearer
Every one of these is a normal part of loving this way, and none of them means you're doing it wrong. If any of this sounds familiar, you're exactly where you should be. Let's take the next step together.

Non-Monogamy,
Beyond the Stereotypes
Consensual non-monogamy (CNM) means openly having romantic or sexual relationships with more than one partner, with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. It’s a broad, beautiful spectrum, and there’s no single correct way to do it.

Open Relationships
A committed couple dating or connecting sexually with others, usually with agreements about how it works.

Polyamory
Multiple romantic relationships with the full knowledge and consent of everyone involved, with an emphasis on emotional intimacy alongside the physical.

Swinging
Recreational sexual connection with others, often as a couple and often within a wider community.

Relationship Anarchy
Letting go of traditional relationship rules and hierarchies, so each connection gets to find its own shape.
CNM is still misunderstood and stigmatized far too often, and choosing non-monogamy is every bit as valid as choosing monogamy. People come to it for all kinds of reasons: a desire for varied experiences, personal growth, or simply because it fits their values. At the heart of it are the same things every healthy relationship needs: communication, consent, and respect. There’s no one “right” way to love, and yours doesn’t need defending here.

Non-Monogamy Therapy FAQs
Should I come to therapy as an individual or as a relationship?
It depends! Challenges in non-monogamy can be both an individual thing and a relationship thing. If you’re wrestling with communication or managing expectations across partners, couples and relationship therapy can be hugely helpful. If you’re working through your own attachment wounds or trauma, individual therapy offers a safe space to unpack that. Not sure which fits? We can help you figure it out together. Book a free consultation to get started.
Do I have to explain non-monogamy to my therapist?
No, and that’s kind of the point. Working with a therapist who already understands consensual non-monogamy (CNM) and affirms non-monogamous relationships means you can skip the judgment and get straight to the work. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we won’t question your choices or steer you toward monogamy. We take our time understanding your specific relationship structure and values, on your terms.
Can therapy actually help with jealousy in non-monogamous relationships?
Yes! Jealousy is often tied to attachment wounds, fear of abandonment, unmet needs, or past trauma. Non-monogamy therapy can help you understand what’s underneath it and learn to name it clearly to your partners from a more grounded, connected place. Jealousy isn’t a failure, it’s information, and we can work with it.
How do I know if non-monogamy is right for me?
We wish we could hand you a clear answer, but every relationship structure is different for every person, and the path to embracing non-monogamy is often non-linear. Non-monogamy therapy in Cambridge can be a safe space to explore your attachment style, needs, and boundaries. A good therapist won’t tell you what’s right for you, they’ll walk alongside you as you figure it out.
How do I find a non-monogamy affirming therapist near me?
Finding a therapist who genuinely understands and affirms non-monogamy can be hard, and it makes all the difference. Look for language that goes beyond “LGBTQ-positive“ and specifically names non-monogamy, polyamory, and ethical non-monogamy. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we specialize in queer-affirming, sex-positive support for all relationship structures, in person in Cambridge and virtually across Ontario.
Can our whole polycule come to therapy, or just two of us?
Bring who makes sense. We work with individuals, couples, triads, and polycules, and we’ll figure out the right shape together. Sometimes everyone’s in the room, sometimes we break into smaller groupings for certain conversations, and sometimes we start with as many of you as possible and adjust from there. Just let us know how many folks will be attending when you reach out, so we can plan the space and time accordingly.
We're monogamous but thinking about opening up. Can you help us before anything happens?
Yes! Having the real conversations before you open up, about needs, fears, agreements, boundaries, and what you each want, tends to make everything smoother than scrambling to repair things after. We’ll help you slow down, get clear, and make sure you’re both moving at a pace that feels right, whatever you decide.
What if one of us is poly and the other is monogamous?
These relationships need honest conversation about what each of you needs to feel secure, and real care to make sure the monogamous partner is genuinely fulfilled rather than just tolerating the arrangement. There’s no formula, and we’ll help you both find the middle ground together, with respect for what each of you is feeling.
What should I ask to know if a therapist actually gets polyamory?
Great question!. Try:
- How many non-monogamous clients have you worked with?
- What’s a metamour? (Bonus points if they answer without looking it up.)
- How would you adapt an approach like EFT for a triad, or handle a polycule with clashing attachment styles?
If a therapist describes themselves as “open-minded” rather than experienced, that’s worth noticing. You deserve genuine competence, and you shouldn’t have to pay to educate your therapist.
Is it normal to still feel jealous, guilt, or insecurity even when everything's going well?
Completely. Jealousy, guilt, insecurity, and fear of abandonment are common and valid in non-monogamous relationships, and feeling them says nothing about whether your relationships are working. Most of us grew up steeped in monogamy, so some rewiring takes time. There’s also a lovely flip side worth naming: compersion, the genuine joy you can feel when someone you love finds happiness elsewhere. It’s real, and it often grows as the harder feelings get understood.
