Our Approach
How Our Couples Therapy Works
Begin Your Journey Together
We start with the two of you, creating a compassionate space to understand your relationship, your history, and what you’re hoping to build. Our first priority is honouring exactly where you are, as a couple.
Meet Us Individually
Next, each partner has a private one-on-one session, a chance to share their own perspective, story, and hopes openly. This helps us understand both of you as individuals, not just the relationship.
Reconnect & Embrace Your Pleasure
From there, we meet as a couple for the rest of our work. With everything we’ve learned, we co-create a path forward, challenge old patterns, and open the way to reclaim connection, intimacy, and pleasure together.

Relationship & Couples Therapy FAQs
What happens if we break up?
Many couples keep coming to couples counselling sessions during or even after a breakup, separation, or divorce. Couples therapy can be a supported space to process the ending together and figure out what comes next, especially when there’s co-parenting or a long history involved. Sometimes it naturally shifts into individual therapy focused on healing and moving forward. However things unfold, you won’t be left to navigate it alone.
Does couples therapy actually work?
Yes! Our couples therapists in Cambridge use evidence-based approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy, Sex Therapy, and the Gottman Method to improve communication, ease conflict, and strengthen your emotional and physical bond. Together with your therapist, you’ll set goals and decide what style of therapy makes the most sense for you as a couple.
How do I know if we need couples therapy or if we're just going through a rough patch?
Every couple faces challenges, and disagreements, financial stress, intimacy shifts, and parenting friction are all normal. If you keep circling the same issue and feel stuck, relationship therapy in Cambridge can help you find a way through. Couples therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis; it’s also a beautiful way to build a stronger, more connected partnership for the long haul.
How can I find a couples therapist near me?
Our office is in Cambridge, on the main road in Preston, a short drive from Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph. If you’re outside the Waterloo Region or would prefer something more accessible, we offer virtual couples therapy and relationship counselling to anyone in Ontario. Free consultations are available by video, so you can find the right fit before you commit.
Are your couples therapists sex-positive and queer-affirming?
Yes! Sex-positivity and queer-affirming care are core to who we are. Our team is proud to support all relationship structures, including queer couples, non-monogamous relationships, and polycules. Whoever you love and however you structure your relationship, you’re genuinely welcome here.
What if my partner doesn't want to come to couples therapy?
Reluctance is really common, and many partners who start out unwilling become curious and open once they see it’s not about being blamed. In the meantime, you can begin with individual therapy focused on your relationship patterns, which often shifts the dynamic on its own. Sometimes one person starting the work creates just enough safety for the other to come along later.
How many couples therapy sessions will we need?
There’s no fixed number, since it depends on what you’re working through and how long the patterns have been in place. That said, many couples see meaningful progress within roughly 8 to 12 sessions, while more complex or long-standing issues benefit from a longer stretch. We usually suggest starting weekly to build momentum, then spacing sessions out as things steady. Your couples therapist will check in on progress and adjust the plan with you as you go.
Do we both have to be there for every session?
Most of the work happens with both of you in the room, since that’s where the relationship comes to life. That said, our process includes a solo session with each partner early on, and there may be moments where individual sessions make sense along the way. If one of you occasionally can’t make it, we’ll figure out the most useful way to use that time together.
Can couples therapy help us reconnect sexually, not just emotionally?
Yes, and it’s one of the things we’re known for. Lots of couples drift in the bedroom right alongside the emotional distance, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Our team is specifically trained in sexual intimacy, so we can help with mismatched desire, closeness that’s faded, painful sex, kink, and finding your way back to pleasure together, the stuff many general couples therapists aren’t equipped to hold. Emotional and physical connection feed each other, and we tend to both.
Will you take sides or tell us who's right?
Never. It’s not our job to referee or decide who “started it.” Two people can both feel completely right and still be hurting each other, so focusing on blame only feeds the cycle that’s causing the pain. Instead, we help you both see the pattern you’re caught in together and the unmet needs underneath it, so you can step out of the fight as a team rather than opponents.
