"I feel so shameful about sex, and I hate that I do.”
You’ve done the reading. You know it’s consensual and safe. And still there’s this voice asking what’s wrong with you. Maybe you’ve never said any of it out loud, or you tried once with a therapist who didn’t react too well. Maybe you love someone whose interests don’t match yours, and neither of you knows how to talk about it. Or you’re wondering where your kink comes from, and that question keeps you up at night.
BDSM and kink therapy in Cambridge can help you set the shame down for good and enjoy your desires fully.
Cultivate desire without shame.
Does this sound familiar?
Kink is far more common than most people realize, and it’s a valid expression of human sexuality.
- Feeling ashamed of your desires, or of parts of yourself
- Convinced no one would understand if you said it out loud
- Scared of being rejected or judged for what you're into
- Wondering whether your kink is connected to your trauma, and what that means
- Struggling to talk about your interests with a partner
- Navigating a relationship where one of you is kinky, and one isn't
- Feeling disappointed or disconnected in your sex life
- Carrying shame that has nothing to do with what you're actually doing
Noticing yourself in these words takes courage. Let's take the next step toward a sex life you love.

BDSM, Kink & Fetishes, Defined.

BDSM
BDSM stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadism and Masochism. A spectrum of activities involving consensual power exchange and physical or psychological stimulation. Consent, communication, and trust are the foundation. Boundaries, desires, and safe words get discussed before anything happens, so everyone stays safe and respected.

Kink
Kink is a broad term for any sexual practice, interest, or desire outside conventional norms. BDSM sits within kink, and kink stretches much further, into role-play, sensory play, power dynamics, and beyond. It isn't always about sex, either. For plenty of folks, the draw is emotional or psychological. Kinks are as unique as the people who have them.

Fetishes
Fetishes are specific, intense attractions to a particular object, body part, or scenario, often more focused than a kink. Materials like latex or leather, body parts like feet, or specific situations. Practiced consensually, fetishes are a perfectly healthy part of a sexual life.

BDSM & Kink Therapy FAQs
Is it normal to be into BDSM or kink?
Yes. Research shows that interest in BDSM and kink is far more common than most people realize. At Encanta Counselling & Wellness, we work from the position that kink is a valid expression of human sexuality, and not a problem to be fixed. You’re in very good, very ordinary company.
Can therapy help my relationship if my partner and I have different levels of interest in kink?
Yes! Mixed-interest relationships, where one partner is kinky and the other isn’t, or is less so, are really common, and support helps enormously. Therapy can help you both navigate communication, sexual scripts, and boundaries. Our kink-affirming therapists draw on Sex Therapy, the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and other approaches to support relationships with different interests in kink.
How do I find a kink-affirming therapist near me?
It can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve been misunderstood or pathologized for your kink before. Look for therapists and clinics that explicitly name kink, BDSM, and fetishes, and that have sex therapy training and a sex-positive stance. Encanta Counselling & Wellness is a sex-positive clinic in Cambridge with therapists who work with kink and BDSM and hold sex therapy training.
Will my therapist judge me or try to change who I am?
No. We’re a kink-affirming practice, and we don’t treat your sexual interests as something to be corrected. Our role isn’t to change who you are; it’s to help you understand and embrace yourself more fully. You can bring the whole thing.
How do I know if I need therapy or if I just need to talk to someone in the kink community?
Both can be genuinely valuable! Community gives you belonging and shared language. Kink therapy in Cambridge takes you deeper into shame, helps you identify your interests, process trauma, navigate relationship dynamics, and understand your boundaries. It’s also a confidential space where nothing follows you back into the scene.
Is kink caused by trauma?
Studies have found no meaningful difference in trauma history between people who practice kink and people who don’t. Kink isn’t a symptom, and it doesn’t need a backstory. That said, if trauma is part of your history, it can be worth understanding how the two live alongside each other, and for some people, kink becomes a place where they get to reclaim choice and control. We’ll follow what’s true for you rather than assuming.
Is BDSM a mental illness or a sign that something's wrong with me?
No. Consensual kink and BDSM aren’t mental health disorders, and the field has moved well past treating them that way, even if not every therapist has caught up. Roughly one in four people report being kinky, so you’re in far more ordinary company than the silence around it suggests. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or relationship stress and you’re also kinky, we won’t tie those threads together unless there’s a real reason to.
Do I have to explain my kink to you before we can start?
No. You shouldn’t be paying us to educate you. We know the terminology, the dynamics, the difference between a scene and a lifestyle, and what aftercare and drop actually are. You can use your own words without a glossary, and we’ll just get to work on whatever brought you in.
Can therapy help me tell the difference between healthy kink and something harmful?
Yes. Consensual kink runs on negotiation, boundaries, and ongoing consent. When those erode, when injuries aren’t accidental, when consent gets murky, or when you’re leaving encounters feeling smaller, that’s worth looking at closely. We’ll help you sort out what’s genuinely yours and consensual from what’s crossed a line. Book a free consultation to learn more.
Is everything I share about my kink confidential?
Yes. What you bring stays between you and your therapist, which matters even more when the community around you is small and interconnected. Nothing you say here follows you back into the scene. There are a few legal limits around safety, which your therapist will walk you through in your first session and outline in your consent form.
