Sexual beliefs are deeply personal and multifaceted, shaped by a range of influences throughout our lives. Understanding where these beliefs come from can be a powerful step towards improving your relationships and your relationship with sex! By exploring the circles of sexuality (one of our favourite tools here at Encanta!) —sensuality, intimacy, sexual health & reproduction, sexual identity, and sexualization—we can gain insight into how our beliefs are formed and how they impact our lives.
The Circles of Sexuality
The concept of sexuality can be understood through five interconnected circles, each representing a different aspect of our sexual lives:
- Sensuality: Sensuality involves our level of awareness, acceptance and enjoyment of our own or others’ bodies. It encompasses how we connect with our bodies and enjoy physical sensations, whether through touch, taste, sight, sound, or smell. Sensuality influences our sexual beliefs by shaping how we perceive and experience pleasure.
- Intimacy: Intimacy refers to the degree to which we express and have a need for closeness with another person. It includes components of caring, sharing, loving, liking, risk taking, vulnerability, self disclosure and trust. Our beliefs about intimacy can affect how we approach relationships and our expectations of emotional closeness.
- Sexual Health & Reproduction: This circle relates to attitudes and behaviours toward our health and the consequences of sexual activity. Its components are behaviour, anatomy and physiology, sexually transmitted infection, contraception and abortion (spontaneous or induced). Our beliefs about sexual health and reproduction are often influenced by educational experiences, cultural norms, and personal experiences.
- Sexual Identity: Sexual identity is how we perceive ourselves as sexual beings. It includes components regarding biological sex, gender identity, gender roles, and sexual orientation. This circle is shaped by personal exploration and societal influences.
- Sexualization: Sexualization involves how we use our sexuality and may include manipulating or controlling others. Its components are media images/messages, flirting, seduction, withholding sex, sexual harassment, incest and rape. It includes the impact of sexual imagery, stereotypes, and societal expectations on our beliefs and behaviors.
Common Fears of Exploring Sexuality
Exploring sexuality can evoke various fears and anxieties, which may stem from a range of sources:
- Fear of Judgment: Many people fear being judged or criticized for their sexual preferences or desires. This fear can stem from societal norms or personal experiences, making it challenging to openly explore and express one’s sexuality.
- Fear of Rejection: The possibility of rejection from partners or loved ones can be intimidating. This fear can impact how we approach sexual relationships and inhibit honest communication about our needs and boundaries.
- Fear of Uncertainty: Sexuality can be complex and fluid, leading to uncertainty about one’s desires or identity. This uncertainty can create anxiety about exploring or redefining one’s sexual beliefs.
- Fear of Vulnerability: Discussing sexual topics can require a high level of vulnerability. The fear of exposing personal feelings and experiences can be a significant barrier to open exploration and self-discovery.

- Work Through Fears: A therapist can help you navigate and address fears related to exploring your sexuality. Through supportive dialogue and therapeutic techniques, you can work towards overcoming anxiety and building confidence.
- Enhance Communication: Therapy can improve your ability to communicate openly about sexual desires and boundaries with partners. This can lead to more fulfilling and respectful relationships.
